You know, I wish I could tell you how White House Rhapsody came to be. Most things I write, I can pinpoint to a specific inspiration, but not this one. The story (as opposed to the romance fiction serial you’re reading here) actually predates the TVshow The West Wing and the film Dave, so while later incarnations of the story reflect those influences, they weren’t the initial jumping off point.
I think it was mostly intended as a sweet, modern fairly tale. There aren’t a lot of princes around these days, so a president would have to do. And being a modern woman, I wanted a female lead that was tops at her game. Thus Mark and Sharon were born.
My goal was to avoid a political polemic – we have enough of those around – and I really didn’t want to delve into the cynicism surrounding modern day Washington, D.C. I just wanted to write a feel good love story. Problem was, as I explored Mark and Sharon’s lives and the lives of the people surrounding them, other characters started demanding their time on the stage, so to speak, and the next thing I knew, I had a novel that never really ended.
Skip forward a bunch of years, and blogging is getting big, so that platform seemed the perfect one for a story like this. So now we have a romantic fiction serial. What fun.
